Coughs are a normal part of everyday life and are even beneficial. Coughing protects the body from ingesting foreign particles, and it helps clear the respiratory system of irritants, smoke, and more. However, a cough that persists beyond a few weeks can be a real hindrance. Read on for effective ways to find relief from a bad cough.
Consuming Fluids
When one is ill, excess mucus can run from the nose down the back of the throat and cause a cough. By keeping hydrated, this discharge can be thinned. This will make it easier for the lungs to expel any mucus. Moreover, a parched body may cause an increase in histamines. The immune system releases these chemicals to swell the nose and produce more mucus which could trigger a cough.
Have Some Honey
People who suffer from nighttime coughs sometimes find relief by using over-the-counter cough suppressants. However, these drugs can have side effects and may be unsafe for infants younger than one year. One study found that honey produced similar benefits to these over-the-counter drugs for nighttime coughs without the side effects. Take one tablespoon of honey several times daily when needed, or stir one tablespoon of honey into a hot drink.
Drink a Hot Beverage
Research indicates that hot liquids may help relieve cold symptoms. Chamomile tea is especially effective because it contains the natural muscle relaxant chamomile. Ginger also helps soothe the airways and is a good choice to add flavor to the tea. Boil chopped fresh ginger root in water for 5-10 minutes.
Get Rid of Irritants
Some individuals are sensitive to artificial fragrances in laundry detergents and air fresheners. Allergic reactions can include coughing. Individuals with respiratory allergies may benefit from cleaning away allergens, such as mold, dust, and pollen.
Sleep on An Inclined Surface
If coughing is due to a cold or allergy, try elevating the head. When lying down, mucus will pool and irritate the throat. To give gravity a helping hand, use an extra pillow or raise the head of the bed with a small surface (e.g., books) to aid the mucus draining from the lungs.
Saltwater Gargle
One of the ways a person can loosen thick mucus in their throat is by gargling. This can also help a person to clear away allergens and bacteria. To try it, mix 1/2 teaspoon of salt into a glass of warm water, then gargle the mixture and spit it out.
