It may be tempting to turn immediately to prescription medications for ease and relief when suffering from chronic pain. However, over-the-counter medicines such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen are effective pain relievers and have fewer side effects than prescription medications. But we can also relieve pain naturally, without the use of any medications at all. Here are five natural pain relievers to help manage pain without medicines.
Lavender Essential Oil
People use lavender oil to sleep better, for anxiety relief, and for pain relief. Research suggests that inhaling lavender oil may help treat migraines. Lavender is known for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and pain-relieving effects in animals. Do not consume essential oils, as they are toxic, and always dilute them if applied topically. Check with the doctor before using any essential oil.
Rosemary Essential Oil
According to some researchers, rosemary can help treat muscle and bone aches, seizures, and headaches. It may also relax muscles, improve memory, and reduce inflammation. Combine the essential oil with olive oil or any carrier oil. Add three to five drops of essential oil to each ounce of carrier oil.
Cloves
Cloves from the Eugenia caryophyllata plant effectively relieve pain from toothache; this is a home remedy dating back thousands of years. A study found that cloves are just as effective as benzocaine when it comes to reducing pain from dental procedures. Research also suggests that clove has antifungal, antioxidant, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory properties.
Capsaicin
Some people also use capsaicin, found in chili peppers to relieve pain naturally. Researchers do not know why the extract relieves pain. However, they believe it works on the nociceptor fibers (nerves that carry pain signals) and reduces the skin’s sensitivity to pain. Applying it topically can cause a mild tingling or burning sensation.
Ginger
Ginger is an interesting root that has caught the attention of herbalists for its potential as a natural pain reliever. Research suggests that by consuming 2 grams of ginger per day for at least five days, one can reduce muscle pain after resistance exercise and running. Ginger might also help reduce inflammation related to exercise and accelerate recovery. If one wants to add fresh ginger to their diet, they can try adding it to smoothies or teas. One can also take ginger supplements available in health stores and online. Note that the natural, fresh ingredient is often healthier than a supplement form.
